Accessibility

We hold this service to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and we test it automatically on every change. Here is what that covers, and what it does not yet.

Last updated 25 August 2026

What we test, and how

Every public page, the exam runner, the pre-exam gate, the candidate dashboard and the whole administrative console are checked against WCAG 2.2 AA automatically, in both the light and dark palettes, as part of the test suite that gates a release. Separately, a test sits an entire exam using only the keyboard.

What we have committed to

  • Colour is never the only signal. Every status carries a word and a symbol as well as a colour, so the service works in greyscale and for anyone who cannot separate red from green.
  • Everything is operable from a keyboard, with a visible focus ring everywhere and a skip link that really moves focus rather than only scrolling.
  • The exam runner is designed for it. Options are chosen with the number keys, questions with the arrow keys, and the remaining time is announced rather than only drawn.
  • Charts are never the only copy of a figure. Each one is accompanied by the number in text and by a table a screen reader can read.

Things we found and fixed

Being specific is more useful than a claim of conformance. The audit in August 2026 found three real defects, all now fixed: a category label printed in a brand colour that failed contrast on a light background; wide tables in the console that could be scrolled with a mouse but not reached with a keyboard; and the Enter key failing to activate buttons inside the exam runner because a keyboard shortcut was intercepting it.

What is not done yet

  • A manual pass with a screen reader by a person who uses one daily. Automated rules catch roughly a third of what matters; the rest needs a human, and we have not done that yet.
  • Testing on browsers other than Chromium. Our automated suite runs on one engine today.
